Association football, soccer, or simply football is a team sport played between two teams consisting of eleven players each. The origins of football are thought to be over 2000 years old. Indeed, in 2004, football's governing body Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) officially acknowledged that China was the birthplace of football, when people played the sport of cuju around 200 BC. In many parts of the world football evokes great passions and plays an important role in the life of individual fans, local communities, and even nations; it is therefore often claimed (and perhaps rightly so) to be the most popular sport in the world. Because of this it is often dubbed the World's Favorite Pastime.
