The Democratic People's Republic of Korea, commonly known as North Korea, is an East Asian country in the northern half of the Korean Peninsula. It is one of the last remaining socialist states and its government is often described as Stalinist, totalitarian, and isolationist.
To the south, it is bordered by South Korea, with which it formed a single nation known as Korea until 1945. Its northern border is predominantly with the People's Republic of China. The Russian Federation shares a 18.3 kilometre (11.4 mi) border along the Tumen River in the far northeast corner of the country.
